The WanderList: Where to eat in Moab (because it's better than you think)
the must-read Monday ritual for women who dream of purposeful journeys
Hi! I’m Katie, a cultural and social psychologist—but you can think of me as your BFF with a PhD. I’m also a travel curator, and I explore the magic that happens when you step out and into the world. Here, I unpack the psychology of travel—how it can heal, reveal, and transform us. If you’re craving more meaning, more beauty, or simply a shift in perspective, you’re in the right place. Thank you so much for being here.
If you’re heading to Moab for a sunrise hike through Arches or a winding day tour of canyon country, don’t overlook the meals between the magic.
One thing that’s true about my personal travel style is the meals make the trip for me.
One of the reasons I travel is undoubtedly for the food.
You’ll never catch me in a rental digging through dusty kitchen cabinets and making spaghetti from a jar.
I want to get out and experience new-to-me culture and cuisine, local spots that make me want to plan visit #2 just to have another bite.
And suprising to me, this desert town has a delightful food scene. It’s definitely worth savouring between your best red rock adventures.
Here are four places I loved during my recent trip to Moab, each worth a spot on your itinerary.
1. Cactus Jack’s
This one takes the cake in Moab for me. Picture Meg Ryan in When Harry Met Sally (yes, that diner scene) and that was me the entire meal. (I also vibed with the branding. And if you know me well, you know I love some good branding.)
Cactus Jack’s is a roadside hangout with major personality and an even better brunch. I ordered the breakfast tacos, warm fry bread, and the “big ole cinnamon roll” (which was simply impossible to pass up, and let’s be honest, also just really fun to say).
We ended up having the best conversation with our server, a local who told us Moab’s food scene has leveled up in recent years, confirming what I was experiencing. The food here is primo.
Cactus Jack’s is the kind of place where the food is filling, the Bloody Mary is unlike anything you’ve seen, and no one cares that your hair’s a little dusty from the trail.
And for my food allergy friends, the manager was incredibly kind and accommodating. Another reason this spot totally won me over.
2. The Food Truck Park
Vibrant and full of a mix of mountain bikers, hikers, and families, this place has serious “best summer ever” energy. It feels like a summer block party where everyone’s sun-kissed and happy.
It’s genuinely fun just to walk around and peek at all the cuisine options, even if you’re not hungry. Tacos, specialty hot dogs, wood-fired pizza, and gelato. And that list is just getting started.
There are shaded picnic tables and that effortless, cool energy you only get in outdoor spaces built for gathering. Right in the heart of downtown, it’s perfectly poised for a post-meal stroll through Moab’s charming little shops.
The perfect après-hike refuel, especially for a group that can’t agree on a single cuisine.
3. Canyon Pizza Co.
Desert pizza? Don’t doubt it. Canyon Pizza Co. is doing things right.
I went for the Mediterranean salad and the Garden Pizza (10/10 would order again). The pizza is chef’s kiss, the vibe is laid-back, and if you’re feeling indecisive, you can even build your own.
A slice and a San Pellegrino here just hits different after a day exploring the desert wild.
4. Spitfire Smokehouse & Taps
A cool reprieve after a hot summer morning in Arches.
I ordered the pulled pork sandwich—fantastic! For those chasing heat, every side had a little kick.
And when we asked about buying a few extra ribs, the manager brought them out on the house. That kind of hospitality always wins me over.
Moab is magic.
It’s teeming with red rock sunsets, rugged trails, and winding canyons that will make you gasp in the best way. And now you know, it’s also full of really good food.
Eat well out there.
Thinking about heading to Moab? Let me know! I’d love to help you find the perfect stay, the best bites, and all your soon-to-be-favourite trails in between.
